Why a Pembroke Welsh Corgi?
They are Big at Heart and Small in Size! Corgi's are smart, wonderful, active, and very kind loving dogs. They are not aggressive or hyper dogs. They are great companions, they live to be with their owners, and they are able to do just that.....because of their size. The height of a Corgi should only measure to be 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder height and should never exceed 30 pounds. Corgi's love their family's and love to play and sleep hard. Corgis are easy keepers with a wash and wear coat that will easily shed dust and dirt. Corgis are minimal eaters, so they won't eat you out of house and home. The corgi is a perfect dog for apartment living if proper exercise is included in his daily routine , a little game of fetch or a afternoon walk will be sufficient. Even though Corgi's are dwarf (small) dogs, please don't tell them that, they think they are fearless when it comes to just about anything. They are very hardy! They naturally herd horses, livestock and even children.
Temperament
Herding dogs tend to bond very closely with their owners. Pembroke Corgis are no exception. Extremely loyal and intelligent, these animals love to please their people, making this a very trainable breed. The Pembroke was bred to herd animals many times larger then itself, and though they are now kept primarily as pets Corgis have kept the boldness and brains needed for such work; even the breed standard insists that a Pembroke must never appear to be shy. They also make great little watchdogs and will bark to alert their owners of a stranger's approach. Corgis, like all herding breeds, may have a tendency to herd small children and animals.
Caring for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi:
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is naturally active and should be well exercised. Provided that daily walks are given along with other outdoor activities , they can do well kept in an apartment. The dense double coat will never have to be clipped or trimmed. However, Corgis do shed, but with such a small package and a good brushing here and there you'll hardly know their there. Pembroke Welsh Corgis have a tendency to put on weight, and this coupled with their long backs can lead to spinal problems, so a good diet and exercise should be maintained throughout their lives.
